For the third anniversary Capcom put the Merchant trillions of pesetas in the red

For the third anniversary of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Capcom posted a joke ledger for the Merchant. Players paid him 39.9 trillion pesetas. He paid out 43.2 trillion for items he bought back. The gap is about 3.3 trillion pesetas.

The studio compared that loss to the price of roughly 40 million rocket launchers. The Merchant still meets Leon in awkward courtyards and sells weapons and upgrades, but across the whole community he is running at a loss.

There is no new system behind it. The tally covers every playthrough, not a new mode. For a character who has popped up with the same patter for three years, the anniversary joke fits him.
