Dune: Awakening consoles launch without full cross-play
On 5 June 2026 Funcom confirmed that the console edition of Dune: Awakening will ship without full cross-play. The studio knows many players wanted to explore Arrakis with friends no matter the platform, but the team is spending its time on the port itself and on the large September update. Speaking to Eurogamer, the developers called cross-play both a technical problem and an operational one.
At launch, PlayStation 5 owners will only meet other PlayStation 5 players. Xbox is a little wider: those players can meet people who bought the game on PC through the Windows Store. There will be no single pool for every platform on day one. Funcom has not ruled the feature out for later, and it is not promising it in the coming months.
On 22 September, alongside the console release and the update, the game will gain a solo mode. That is an unusual turn for a project many people treated as an MMO. Funcom has said more than once that it sees Dune: Awakening first as a large survival game with online pieces, not as a classic massively multiplayer RPG.
For now the studio is betting on a stable launch rather than the longest feature list. For fans of Frank Herbert’s universe, that is the more practical call: a game that works on day one matters more than a pile of features the team cannot finish.
