Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold another 316,000 copies after Brand New Day

The box office for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has pulled people back to Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Players are reinstalling the game and buying it again.

Alinea Analytics estimates that since the film opened, Insomniac has sold another 316,000 copies and taken in $11 million on PlayStation 5 and Steam in less than two weeks. Over the past weekend daily active users hit 1 million for the first time since launch, about 2.6 times the pre-film level. That is a real return for a game almost three years old.

The patch with two new suits, including Tom Holland's Brand New Day look, played a part as well.

Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics also gave the lifetime total: 18.2 million copies, 92% of them on PS5. Over three years since launch that is about $1.2 billion in revenue. He called it one of the clearest transmedia effects on record, and noted that spikes like this still mostly happen by accident. Brand New Day arrived almost three years after the game, and lining up a major film with a major game runs into unpredictable schedules and delays.
