Takeuchi says Requiem hides both a question and an answer
After Village, the eighth main game, the ninth chapter dropped the number and shipped as Resident Evil Requiem. The subtitle raised plenty of questions, and franchise producer Jun Takeuchi tried to answer them in a Japanese magazine issue for the 30th anniversary of Biohazard.
He said the title was not chosen only for the dictionary meaning of a requiem. In the letters of REQUIEM he reads RE as response and Q as question, so the name is meant to hold both. He promised to explain what that means for the story, but not yet.
The comment works as a hint that would spoil the ending if he finished it. A large story expansion already being discussed is where many expect those secrets to surface. There is also talk that the hidden meaning could tie into the Code: Veronica remake now in development.
Capcom is asking fans to wait. The publisher says it already has a plan for the stretch after the current run of remakes is finished.
