Oasis bought about 8.86% of Kadokawa
Kadokawa, the Japanese holding company that owns FromSoftware, has a large new shareholder. Oasis Management bought about 8.86% of the stock. FromSoftware made Dark Souls and Elden Ring, so the deal landed as games news and not only as a corporate filing.
Oasis said the purchase is meant to let it take part in "important proposals." It did not say which proposals. The wording leaves room for a shift in how the holding company is run.
The fund's reputation did not start with this stake. More than ten years ago Oasis urged Nintendo to push harder into mobile games and to charge small fees for in-game upgrades. The example was a higher jump for Mario. The idea drew wide criticism. Nintendo did later succeed on mobile, but it did not adopt that pay-for-a-jump scheme.
A stake in Kadokawa can now turn into fresh ideas about the games business, including how games make money. How much weight the fund will actually have is still unknown. The purchase itself is already being discussed by players and by people who follow the accounts.
