Sztybor calls David's death a happy ending

Bartosz Sztybor called the ending of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season one happy. David Martinez and most of the crew die: he sacrifices himself so Lucy and Falco can get away from Adam Smasher, and the dream of the Moon with Lucy stays unfinished. Before that, viewers lose Maine and Rebecca.

For the author, some of the heroes were tragic from the start, and another outcome barely fit them. Darker variants existed, in which David remains a living instrument of Arasaka. Next to those, Sztybor says, the ending that aired is not the harshest. When people talk about a bad ending, he hears a happy one.

His view of the world did not change for season two. The story is new, the heroes are different, and David should not be expected at the center. The premiere is 20 October.

In this universe, a happy ending for Sztybor does not mean a wish fulfilled. It means things could have been worse.
