Luke Ross says copies spread after the VR mod was removed
On 9 January CD Projekt Red sent Patreon a DMCA notice over Luke Ross's paid Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod. The platform took the post down at once. Ross told IGN he had no say: Patreon carried out the request on its own.
Through Jan Rosner, the studio repeated the condition. Monetizing its intellectual property without permission is not allowed. Ross was told to make the mod free for everyone, with voluntary donations, or remove it. There were no talks beyond that formula.
Ross, who puts income from his mods at about 20,000 dollars a month, rejects that reading. He says the mod contains neither CD Projekt code nor its assets. After the removal he said users, afraid of losing the mode, began passing around unofficial copies and arguing that the work had become public property.
The future of the VR mode was still open. The legal fork was unchanged: a free version with donations, or no mod in public.
