Attack on Titan and Bleach shaped the look of Expedition 33

On 1 August 2026 Broche told Automaton that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was fed by more than Japanese RPGs. Among anime, Attack on Titan sat hardest on the story: a shared threat with almost nowhere to go, and a party that walks into it anyway.

He also looks at silhouette. Attack on Titan’s heroes are recognizable from their gear before you see a face. Sandfall wanted the same from its costumes. Broche is rewatching the series and calls it an absolute masterpiece.

Lead character artist Alan Reynaud adds Bleach. The team treats that design as a model: simple shapes you can read at once, under the rule of cool, so a character stays striking and recognizable.
