Pondsmith says Alt was drawn to Johnny's guilt, not his fame
In an interview with the R. Talsorian Games channel, Mike Pondsmith explained why Alt Cunningham got involved with Johnny Silverhand. Alt, for him, is not a damsel: she is a netrunner who outplays dangerous people. Her habit is to pick up the bright and the broken. Johnny fit that pattern.
Outside, he is a rocker with a silver arm. Inside, Pondsmith says, he is someone who does not believe he deserves love and blames himself for everything that goes wrong. In the story Never Fade Away he cut Alt off too early during the rescue at Arasaka Tower. She could have finished the breach, taken the corporation's money, and left with him. The impulse wrecked it, and he still blames himself.
Fans compressed that into a formula about a wounded animal you want to heal. Pondsmith describes the passion, the toxicity, and the tragedy as character, not as a romance stamp.
Decades later the pair remains one of the most alive in cyberpunk because of the guilt, not because of a stage scene.
