A former engineer ties seven years of work to rewriting the engine
A former member of Pearl Abyss’s engine team explained the seven-year cycle of Crimson Desert by saying BlackSpace was reworked almost every year, for more polygons and different performance. Instead of only culling what is invisible, he said the engine removes vertices and moves some CPU work onto the graphics card.
In the final build, he said, there is no script code. The team uses integer and bit data and simplified structures that are rare in current projects. He puts that focus on speed above typical Unreal Engine 5 games and allows that it let a small group produce a lot of content.
He is cautious about the gameplay itself. He left the content team earlier and does not know if it stays interesting for hundreds of hours. He could not stay with Black Desert for long. The note dates launch to 19 March on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
