GDC previews no longer show Tarnished Edition falling to 15 frames
FromSoftware delayed Elden Ring Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 so it could spend more time on performance. Fresh previews from GameSpot and Polygon at GDC 2026 describe a port that already runs much more evenly.
The demo lasts about 15 minutes and covers the opening of the game. Polygon noted that this is enough time to reach Margit at least. In handheld play it still is not as smooth as 60 frames per second, but the drops to 15 frames reported earlier do not show up in these builds. The studio has not named a frame-rate target. The smoother image could point to 30 frames, or to an attempt to stay near 40.
The edition was announced in April 2025, and the name already sounded like a version that gathers everything in one package. In the summer of that year Felix Sanchez of Nintendo Life described an earlier showing very differently: a ceiling of 30 frames, falls to 20 in busy moments, and sometimes to 15. He compared the feel to Ocarina of Time and said he understood why they did not want that footage shown.
Older console versions of Elden Ring were praised for running evenly. On PC the game was long known for small hitches tied to shader compilation. On Linux, and on the less powerful Steam Deck, the picture improved where Proton can compile shaders before the game starts.
