Broche treats Expedition 33 as an heir to Lost Odyssey

In a Jeux Vidéo Club interview Guillaume Broche returned to Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Lost Odyssey. For him it is the main game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 grew out of.

He calls the 2007 project exceptional and passed over. Random battles and a familiar frame were the complaints at the time, while the story hit hard. Broche still replays the soundtrack and says it is the last game that made him cry.

After Lost Odyssey, big turn-based RPGs with a serious plot and a realistic picture nearly vanished. Mistwalker released it as an Xbox 360 exclusive after Sakaguchi left Square Enix. It is in the Xbox store now and runs on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility.

Broche describes his own RPG as a continuation of a line nobody else was carrying. The kind of game he loved had left the shelves, so he decided to make one.
