Sandfall calls PlayStation’s retreat from discs a sad call
The same day the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developers answered Sony’s plan to stop shipping new PlayStation games on discs from 2028. The studio still treats a physical copy as part of the culture, even as digital sales grow.
Broche called the retreat from discs a very sad decision. Many people at Sandfall collect boxes, and holding a game is, for him, part of what the work is worth.
Tom Guillermin said the physical edition of Expedition 33 was not free: the schedule stretched, and the share per copy shrank. The team still wanted players to be able to put the game on a shelf. Right after launch they went to a shop and bought their own disc. What hit Broche hardest was a photo of the box on a shelf in Akihabara.
By then the Baldur's Gate 3 developers, the creator of Disgaea and the group Anonymous had already spoken against Sony’s decision. For Sandfall a disc remains a way to keep the game in your own hands.
