Digital Foundry says E-Day raises the graphics bar on Xbox Series
Digital Foundry’s breakdown of Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series X|S calls it one of the strongest Unreal Engine 5 showcases on this generation. They highlight MegaLights, Epic’s ray-traced dynamic lighting, which handles thousands of sources, from street lamps to muzzle flashes and explosions.
Series X has three modes using Temporal Super Resolution. Performance targets 60 frames at about 936p internal, Balanced targets 40 frames at about 1000p, and Quality targets 30 frames at about 1152p. The image is scaled to 4K. The frame rate holds more evenly in linear scenes; large spaces and fast movement can dip, and VRR softens that.
Series S has less memory, so the compromises show. Performance runs near 576p, Balanced near 648p, and Quality near 792p, again with TSR. Global illumination and reflections are simpler, and 60 frames is less stable than on Series X, though Digital Foundry says severe drops are rare.
The piece treats the studio’s work as a showcase of how far lighting, geometry, and reflections can already be pushed on current Xbox hardware.
