A 200 GB leak shows a cancelled Liberty City for GTA V
An archive of nearly 200 gigabytes of internal Rockstar material has reached the open internet: source code, working tools and debug builds of Grand Theft Auto V for several platforms. Digging through the files, dataminers found both early pieces of the sixth game and a much more concrete trace of a cancelled story for the fifth.
Dataminer TJGM showed test zones from an expansion with the working name LibertyV. The code includes coastlines, audio meshes and utility files. From the outline, that Liberty City was meant to be clearly larger than the city in GTA IV. The leading guess is that after priorities shifted, the work was shelved so the city could later be adapted as a large expansion for the sixth game or for its online mode. That is a theory, not a plan the studio has confirmed.
The same pile holds internal tools, debug interfaces for the supported platforms and unused sketches for GTA Online. An early voice pass of the mission "Friend Request" also turned up, the one where Tracy and Michael argue over the television. There are 3D pieces made at the start of production on the sixth game as well. Rockstar and Take-Two have not commented. The archive is large enough that the read-through is not finished, and more detail on cancelled branches may still surface.
