Broche defends turn-based RPGs as a living genre
On 3 July 2026, talking to Video Games Chronicle, Broche answered people who file turn-based RPGs under the past. For him the form is an ordinary mechanic that still works and pays out a pleasure of its own, separate from action games.
He finds the taste of the genre in preparation. Dozens of hours on the party, the skills and the plan pay off in a hard fight. He compares it to a problem: gather the parts and find the move against the boss.
Devil May Cry sits on the other pole in that comparison. It rewards reflexes and dexterity. A turn-based RPG pays for calculation. The “old-school” label, he says, just mixes up two different pleasures.
