DLSS 5 warps faces in the GTA V pause menu
A clip spread through PC communities this week in which DLSS 5 in GTA V starts to slide after the pause menu opens. The character's face pulls apart frame by frame while the scene is almost still. A post in Reddit's r/pcmasterrace had about 62,000 votes and nearly 3,000 comments when the story was written. The jokes treated it as a psychedelic effect, or as the network slipping out of its cage.
GTA V has no official DLSS 5 support. The image is injected with community tools such as RenoDX and ReShade, the same approach modders have already used in Cyberpunk 2077 and Skyrim. The clip therefore does not show how the technology would behave with a proper integration from the game's developers.
The pause menu matters on its own: the game heavily blurs the background and nearly freezes. One explanation is that the modified pipeline keeps feeding the network even though the engine is no longer sending a full set of data. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as 3D-guided neural rendering. The result is built not only from the current frame, but from motion vectors, accumulated history and parameters a developer is supposed to set. Without a clear flag that the pause should be left alone, small changes in the blurred image are read as detail, and the error stacks up.
Some viewers think the network's output is being fed back in, which would make a loop. Others say GTA V was simply never prepared for this mode. The difference from older DLSS is that NVIDIA is presenting the new version as real-time generative rendering: it does not only raise the resolution, it also fills in light, materials and skin from what the model has already learned.
